What is a legal translation?

Who does the legal translation?

Legal translations can be done by a professional translator with legal expertise. This does not necessarily have to be an accredited translator, unless specifically required by the authority. The most important thing is that the translator understands the legal terms and can apply them correctly in the target language.

Legal or official translation - what is the difference?

Many people confuse legal translation and official (authorised) translation, but they are not the same thing.

• Legal translation refers to legal documents, such as contracts or legislation. It is not automatically official unless required by an authority.

• Official translation is drawn up by an authorised translator and has legal force. Such translations are needed, for example, when applying for a residence permit, studying or working abroad, or when dealing with the authorities.

In which situations is a legal translation needed?

The need for legal translation can arise in many everyday or professional situations, such as:

• In international court proceedings

• Translations of contracts or wills

• Localisation of legislative reforms or regulations

• When applying to work or study abroad

• When a company expands abroad

Decisions, certificates or permit application processes from public authorities may also require legal translation, even if they do not require formal authorisation.
